FR Après une situation post-électorale bouleversante pour sa stabilité politique et économique déjà précaire, le Congo tente de relancer son projet de construction de la plus grande centrale électrique d’Afrique, Inga III, sur le fleuve Congo. Kinshasa, la capitale, reste dans l’obscurité et l’insécurité profonde. Sa population lutte pour l’accès à la lumière. Kudi, père de famille, travaille la nuit comme vendeur ambulant de lumières. Dans une quête acharnée, il accorde toute son énergie à la réalisation d’un rêve avec les habitants de son quartier : acheter un bout de câble électrique volé par des gangs urbains et rétablir l’électricité durant les fêtes de Noël et de Nouvel An. Ce film dresse avec subtilité le portrait d’une population qui se réinvente malgré tout, dans un environnement en proie à la violence et à la beauté des nuits de Kinshasa, et l’incertitude du lendemain.

 

EN After an election period that has shaken its already precarious political and economic stability, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is attempting to revive the project of building Inga III, Africa’s largest power plant, on the Congo River. The capital of Kinshasa is shrouded in darkness and insecurity, and its population is struggling for access to lighting. In a relentless quest, Kudi, the head of a family and a street vendor who sells lighting supplies, unites the people of his neighbourhood to make their dream come true: they hope to purchase electrical cable stolen by gangs in order to restore electricity in time for Christmas and New Year’s celebrations. Rising Up at Night is a subtle portrayal of a population that, despite the challenges it faces, is reinventing itself in an environment that is plagued by violence, coloured by the uncertainty of tomorrow, and immersed in the beauty of Kinshasa nights.
